OREGON: Things Look Different Here
Oregon likes to pride itself on its national reputation for quality of life, progressive politics, environmental protection and innovative land use planning.
But as Frontline on PBS made very clear last night, for the last 15 years Oregon has contributed something FAR more consequental to the rest of the nation.
That's right! Tweekers & Meth Heads!
Golly gee, things do look different. Just ask Theresa Baxter above. She's so happy about her quality of life in Oregon, she's decided to risk her looks and her life to cook crystal meth. And here's a big, Oregon-sized smile from one of her tweeker buddies!
So The Question for Oregon policy makers is: What To Do?
Oregon has been ground zero for Meth since the early 1990s, with the longest-lasting high-addiction rate in the country. Not only that, but the Oregonian has documented in its series "Unnecessary Epidemic" (is there such a thing as a necessary epidemic? Golf Clap for The O Staff on that one!) that the meth epidemic has been exported virulently to other states in the West and now across the Mississippi. Check the map yourself!
Here's a bold idea: Oregon Should Promote Meth as a Traded Industry!
-We have a competitive advantage - East Multnomah County!
-We have a solid track record of import/export to other states!
-It's Manufacturing! Even the Unions can get behind it!Family Wage Quality Jobs!
-It doesn't require much land - a barn or flophouse will do! 1000 Friends of Oregon can get behind it!
-Portland Targeted Industry! We'll attract even more of the coveted 20-Something Creative Class. And really, what's more creative than a cash-strapped tweaker coming down from a high?
-Cottage Industry! Detailed illustration and instructions for cooking meth in your very own "superlab" are online.. Thanks Oregonian!
-The Oregonian has also published a handy street-lingo guide to meth and tweakers!
