OVERHEARD BEFORE A BEND CITY COUNCIL MEETING
So, Dave, we killed Wal-Mart. We don't have to worry about the help shopping in Bend.
But they can still live here, Jim.

Well, they can still buy a house anyway. You've seen that Desert Skies development, haven't you?
Yeah. Unattached townhouses for the little people. But I thought the little people were supposed to live in Redmond.
Yeah, and Madras.
So what do we do?
Zone them away. Let's create a minimum lot size so that these ne'er-do-wells can't move here.
How so?
Well, if we restrict a minimum coverage area on a lot, affordability will set sail with the cost of land. A $200,000 home with an ugly little lawn will now be $280,000 with a larger yard and the same sized house. All because we forced them to buy more land in the name of good urban design!
But doesn't that directly conflict with increased density goals?
Yeah, so what? Who said liveability was a goal for everyone? Nobody.

The genius of this is that is creates more value in existing homes, and subsequently over 70% of voters. This is accomplished while also cloaking classism in environmentalism.
