I’ve blogged before about consumerism and rational expectations. This article from Slate is an interesting evaluation of the economics of Ebay auctions. The article discusses why consumers do not always follow expected rational behavior. Specifically, while attempting to act in their best interests, consumers are markedly poor at processing information effectively.
This study, referenced by Slate is an excellent example of how economic theory does not always hold water when tested by reality.

I am not sure that this shows that the general theories are wrong, perhaps the understanding of the capabilities of humans to process information was wrong.
