Calmer Heads Prevail
Cornelius, Oregon is approving the application of a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Highway 8 immediately adjacent to the City of Forest Grove. Although traffic impacts and crime were clear concerns, the absence of an unhinged cadre of sociology professors let the application enjoy a rational, considered process of scrutiny.
I tip my hat to Cornelius. Rather than listen to troublemakers from outside of town, they likely considered the proposal and realized it wasn't any different from Wal-Marts in Newport, McMinnville, Newberg, Klamath Falls, Medford, Portland, Bend/Redmond, Hood River, or any other store in Oregon that has failed to cause problems, much less long-term, for downtowns in those communities.
You'd think someone would drive around and take photos for documentary proof!
Speaking of invitations for comments/contest, I invite anyone to submit photos/proof of an Oregon Wal-Mart that actually has had a negative impact on the local community.
And remember, did the economy suck wind before the Wal-Mart because of timber or ag industry decline? Then that doesn't really count, does it?
Simple rule: Wal-Mart must have caused the economic decline of the Oregon town and its shops.

It is sort of unfair to ask someone to show that Cornelius has declined, given its pre-exising condition.
