Despite Monday's last ditch effort byprominent leading senior democrats, judge Samuel Alito was confirmed yesterday as the 110th justice of the U.S. Supreme court. by a margin of 58-42. In summation, four senate democrats had the political savvy to avoid the Kerry/Kennedy led mockery of the judicial appointment process. Hats of to senators Ben Nelson (NE) Tim Johnson (SD), Kent Conrad (ND), and Robert Byrd (WV). Robert Byrd???
Which brings me to dem' boys in Massachusetts, whose attempt to trip up judge Alito in the confirmation hearings left them looking like and aggravated Ren & Stimpy fighting over a hairball.
The fact of the matter is, the correct political move would have gotten Alito out of the news last week rather than lay down for the George Sorros wing of their party. Rather, last night the demos gave Mr. Bush his nominee hours before we was slated to address the Nation. The result: a rowdy republican side of the isle was blessed with the image of "W" congratulating Alito of the house floor, biting back his trademark smirk while the demos were reduced to polite hand tapping and the occasional Hillary eye roll. "W" even took a pot shot at Kennedy in his opening remarks stating, "But even tough debates can be conducted in a civil tone, and our differences cannot be allowed to harden into anger." reminding us of his Monday antics.
All things considered, Samuel Alito's confirmation is celebration for many around the country, not just republicans. Yesterday afternoon a rather disgruntled Charles Schumer was quoted as saying, "I must say, I wish the president was in a position to do more than claim a partisan victor tonight." However, much to the dismay of Chucky, a Washington Post-ABC News Poll indicates that the majority of the American Public is celebrating as well.

I predict another, unexpected SOTU appointment within two years - Stevens is going to have unexpected health problems. He'll have to step down before a Demo's in the White House and the fight over the nomination is going to be ugly.
Bush fatigue on both sides will be the wildcard.. and the debate will shape the 2008 race.
I am glad that Bush decided to pick a conservative for this post. Placating the Dems really provides no political benefit (ie., the Medicare "reform"). The Republicans will miss W largely because he brought out the irrational anger in the Democrats. I think they will all be surprised if he steps down at the end of his term and doesn't declare himself President for Life.
